Perhaps no other tool is as essential and versatile as the simple screwdriver. To help you find the right set for you, I have detailed the features and put together a list of the best screwdriver sets currently available.

UPDATED: March 28, 2022.

MY TOP PICK:
If you are looking for the best overall, I recommend the Craftsman 9-31794 17-Piece Set because it features a range of the most common slotted and Phillips tips, heat-treated shafts, durable butyrate handles, and is made in the USA.

The first recorded evidence of a screwdriver was in the late 15th century. Over the past 500 years, the basic design has remained the same, however, there are several recent innovations that add convenience and functionality.

RELATED: The 10 Best Tool Bags

The three main parts of a screwdriver are the handle, shaft, and tip:

Handle

The handle is what provides the connection to your hand to provide the driving torque to the screw. Handles were traditionally constructed from wood however modern screwdrivers feature handles mainly made from rigid plastics or hybrid materials.

A common handle material combination is the use of polypropylene and rubber which provides both strength and grip benefits. For example, in the product information, you may see a “PP+TPR handle” which means a combination of polypropylene and thermoplastic rubber.

Most handles feature an indentation or lobe design that allows for improved grip and prevents the screwdriver from rolling around on the work surface.

Some include small grips on the lower part of the handle that allows you to quickly spin the screwdriver with your fingertips to remove a loose screw.

Shaft

Also known as the blade, rod, or bar the shaft is the portion of the screwdriver that connects the handle to the tip. Most shafts are constructed from steel for durability and to resist the twisting torque. Typically the steel is coated with a lacquer or chromed to resist rust and corrosion.

Some shafts include a hexagonal section near the handle to allow for the use of a wrench to add additional leverage when loosening or tightening.

Tip

The tip of a screwdriver is what defines its type. The most common types are the simple blade tip for slotted screws and cross tip Phillips. Beyond these two types, there is a massive variety of tips including square, hex, torx, and many more.

Some screwdrivers also include coated tips that provide additional grip with the screw or fastener. This coating can consist of something like an industrial diamond or sandblasted texture.

Magnetic tips are also common which help to hold the screw in place when placing or removing it in the workpiece.

Interchangeable Tips

Interchangeable tips are another common feature that allows for a single handle with a variety of tip options that fit into a socket on the end of the shaft. The tips can be held in by either friction or a magnet. This setup offers the advantage of a range of tip options while maintaining a compact, portable form factor.

Organization

Some of the sets include either a storage case or a display rack. The rack can often be placed on the workbench for convenient access and organization. Most also offer the ability to be mounted on the wall to reduce the clutter on the work surface.

Now, on to the individual products. I’ve compiled a list of the top models available from well-known manufacturers including Craftsman, DEWALT, Stanley, and more. Each unit has been assigned a key feature that makes it particularly noteworthy and has been broken down according to its essential functions to help you make an informed selection.
